Your identity is essential; it is what makes you who you are. It is your qualities, beliefs, personality, looks, and expressions. It is also your fears and habits. Identifying someone can either be positive or adverse and reveals their true image while showing how they stand out from others.
Ethnicity plays a significant role in a person’s or group’s identity. This concept is also known as an ethnic identity. It can have both a positive and/or negative effect on an identity. Some people or groups may even want to be identified by their ethnicity. There are also people who have to identify with someone they do not want to be because of their ethnicity. This is also showcased in the text Chameleon, where the main character has to identify based on her ethnicity even though she did not want to. This creates many complications in her life.
Though ethnicity changes an identity, it does not have to entirely define the identity. Your identity is mostly built from your ethnicity, as ethnicity is introduced to you right as you are born. This can also be seen in foster kids as it is why many of them behave differently from other kids. They have multiple ethnicities, and it keeps changing with their new families, thereby changing their identity until they have gone through adolescence, and moves out on their own, shaping their identity how they like.
