Analysis of Enrique’s Journey’s style of writing from page 97-98
In the text there is a lot of adjectives which makes the text more coherent and it gives us a feeling that we are in the situation that the sentence describes or at least that for example we are bystanders, on page 97 line 8-9 “One of the bandits broadsides him three times with the flat blade of a machete.” I think this sentence made me feel especially uncomfortable because of the very specific language for example in the part of the sentence where he uses the word broadsides instead of slowly stabbing or putting the knife into him. Sonja also makes the sentences very short when some horrible happens, it makes the text more intriguing to read. I see that in the text where Wendy gets raped: “He orders Wendy to remove her pants. She refuses. He throws her to the ground and places the tip of the machete against her stomach. She begins to cry. He puts the edge of the blade to her throat. She takes of her pants, and he checks them for money. “if you scream.” He says, “we cut you to bits” then he rapes her.” This little paragraph is a perfect example of the short sentences, and examples for sentences with little meaning that gets extended due to adjectives.
