The chapter starts with a photo of Enrique at his kindergarten graduation, giving the reader a picture of the kid abandoned by his mom. The blame she feels for giving up her child is shown by the way she can't "take a gander at him" as she is planning to leave. The story is written as a straight narrative. Her work is a digest of her research and interviews with virtually all of the book´s real-life ¨characters¨ set in the present tense to convey the immediacy of the events. She added the full names of many individuals, such as Agueda Amalia Valladares and Marco Antonio Zablah, which affirmed the journalistic nature of this effort. At the same time, Nazario kept the full names of Enrique, Lourdes, and others to protect his identity. The chapter describes the events that led to his decision to travel to el Norte, so it’s kind of a prologue for Enrique. The sad, dead-end nature of his own life explains why his determination to reunite with her is as unshakable as it is inevitable.
