The Butterfly Circus is a short film. It takes place in the 1930s in the United States of America. The 1930s were years of depression in America. Many people were homeless and unemployed. In other words, people were generally rather poor.
In the beginning of the film, we meet Mr. Mendez who is the charismatic master of a small circus, the Butterfly Circus. He leads his troupe through Southern California. Sometimes for free, the members of the Butterfly Circus make performances to bring some light into the dull lives of people.
One evening, they see a sign of a carnival with a sideshow and they decide to go to the carnival. Upon arriving, they see a fun fair with carousels, games and a freak show.
Here, Mr. Mendez meets Will. Will is the main attraction of the freak show. Will suffers from the Tetra-Amelia Syndrome. This means that Will is limbless.
Will is on display alongside other weird characters, such as a man with many tattoos and a bearded woman. People only come to watch the freak show in order to get a good laugh.
Will is bitter and unhappy.
When Mr. Mendez sees Will, he says to him, “You are magnificent”. Will does not like his comment and spits him in his face. Mr. Mendez apologizes.
