Back in the time racism was something we often saw. Imagine that a person of a different race is unworthy just because of the color of their skin. Today it is still a problem we see but in the short story “The new girl” written by Marc Mitchell, here we see what the past looked like in the white neighborhoods of America.
The most important characters in the short story, are the narrator, his friend Allison, and the young African American girl. The narrator and Allison are friends because they are the only two children on their street. When you are living in the lower-middle class, you just must take what you can get. That is also why Alison, and the narrator are playing because they have no others to play with. The narrator and Alison didn’t like each other: “But I don’t think she liked me very much, and I don’t know if I liked her either”. (S 1, L 13-14)
The story takes place in Prospect Street, this is a white lower-middle-class neighborhood, in Alabama in South America. In Prospect Street, black people are not welcome, which is supported in this quote “I don’t want that black girl anywhere near me, though.” (S 2, L 15-16) You get the feeling that they are not used to there being dark people in their area, and that is why they react as they do to the fact there is a dark girl.
