The day is Tuesday 1826, and a man named Michael has had enough of the way he got treated. His wife and daughter got sold away a few months ago and he couldn't take it anymore.

One day he got in contact with an agent (a person who pretended to be a slave, from a network formed by white people from the north, and escaped slaves), and he had a plan. Only 10 people could escape otherwise they would be caught. It was Michael, two of his friends named Josh and Adam, and seven other people they didn't know. He told them to use the Underground Railroad because that was the best chance they had. The agent had studied the guards' routine for a long time, and he told them that the best time to escape was in the wintertime. That's because the longer the nights the more ground the escapees could cover. They decided to escape on a Saturday night because the masters would have to wait until Monday morning, to place an announcement in the newspaper that people escaped. Now they just had to wait for the perfect day and time.

They were still in the middle of September, so they had to push through the weeks there were in front of them. It was hard and exhausting, but the weather began to cool down. As the weeks went by, the days got shorter and shorter. It was getting cold, and they weren't given a lot of clothes. Some people froze to death because they couldn't take the cold weather.
