When King James of Scotland became king of England, people hoped that things would turn out for the better for the Catholics. This didn’t happen though and therefore some Catholics wanted to assassinate King James, which failed. 15 catholic men wanted to kill him.

They wanted to blow up the parliament, so the king would die along with his men.

They put gunpowder under the parliament. Some from the group realised, that the assassination would kill heaps of innocent people, which made them think twice about the lethal project.

Guy Fawkes had second thoughts, and is today the reason why November the 5th is called Guy Fawkes Day in Britain. There is a famous rhyme:

Remember, remember!

The fifth of November,

The Gunpowder treason and plot;

I know of no reason

Why the Gunpowder treason

Should ever be forgot!

Pottawatomie Massacre, May 24-25, 1856:

While slavery in 1854 still existed, not all American people approved of it. The southern states were supporters of it, while the northern people were against is.

The town Lawrence was build by anti-slavery people, which meant, that the town was often attacked by pro-slavery folks.

On may 21, Lawrence was attacked by a group led by the County Sheriff. He claimed that the settlers of Lawrence had broken the pro-slavery laws of the local government. Houses, a hotel and newspaper offices were destroyed during this attack.
