The novel Of Mice and Men is written by John Steinbeck and was published in 1937. Steinbeck is a famous American writer. The book talks about two men, George and Lennie, who travel together to find work.

The story takes place in California in the 1930s. This was the time of the Great Depression, when many people had no jobs and had to move around to survive. The narrator is a third-person narrator who tells us what the characters say, do, and sometimes think. The main characters are George and Lennie.

We can see early that Lennie depends on George. For example, George says: “Lennie! … You gonna be sick like you were last night.” (p. 3). This shows that George takes care of Lennie like a child.

Lennie is a huge man. He has a shapeless face, pale eyes, and wide shoulders. His hands are very large, like paws, and he moves heavily and slowly, almost like an animal. Steinbeck writes: “A huge man, shapeless of face, with large, pale eyes, with wide, sloping shoulders.” (p. 2). This tells us that Lennie is strong and different from normal men.

Lennie dresses like a worker. He wears denim trousers, a denim jacket, and a black hat, the same as George. His clothes show that he is poor and lives a simple life.
