Most siblings have some sort of competition going on, where the winner gets love and respect from the parents, while the loser gets yelled at. This is why we sometimes hate our sisters and brothers, but at the end of the day we know that we would never want to live without having them in our lives, and that we would do anything for them. In the short story “Abduction” the main character Ann does what she think is the best to try to help her little brother establish a good life.
When her little brother is only sixteen years old, Ann decides that he should come and live with her in London. She works as a doctor, and earns a lot of money, which she for instance spends on clothes and allowance for her brother. We are told that Ann was sterilized when she was younger, but since she works as a paediatrician there must be something that she likes about children, and therefore it is a mystery why she will not have any children of her own.
When her little brother’s girlfriend becomes pregnant, Ann interferes and tells them to get an abortion. This makes the girlfriend, Marianne, say the following about Ann: “She’s more like a possessive mother than a sister… Are you sure you’re not really her baby? Did she have you while she was still a schoolgirl and has been passing herself off as your sister ever since?” It is not hard to understand Marianne’s reaction, because since when has it been normal for an older sister to get herself involved in a siblings life. If anyone should have anything to say about the fact that the little brother is to become a father it would be his parents. The little brother tells Marianne that he too has had the same thought, but his older siblings all remember their mother being pregnant.
