”The Dress” is a short story written by Julia Darling in 2006. The story portrays the strained relationship between the sisters, Rachel and Flora, but also their relationship to their mother and how they function as a family. The main problem in the story is this certain silk dress, that causes a lot more conflicts than you could ever imagine.
All this takes place in an upper class district, where we, in medias res, meet the two sisters Rachel and Flora, and Rachel is searching for her dress, but Flora has taken it. We follow the two sisters who are very different. Flora is a bit childish, confused and is jealous of her sister who's a bit more pretty, clever and has it all under control.
As the story continues, we follow the two sisters to a restaurant, where they are to celebrate their mothers 40th birthday. There is a negative atmosphere going on between the sisters, and when they are back home, the confrontation from Rachel against Flora begins. She finds out, that Flora has ruined her dress.
The story drags us, chronologically, through the whole story where the problem between the sisters develops, and at last goes over the mothers power of solving their problems.
