Radiation is all around us and whether we know it or not we are exposed to it every day. The amount of radiation is however not high enough to hurt us not even on the cellular level because healthy cell can repair themselves. But knowing what radiation is and why radiation may damage our cells is a useful knowledge. We found out that being exposed to a big dose of radiation may cause a cancer tumour or kill the cell which was exposed.
In the assignment ? radiations ability to penetrate objects like lead has been experimented. We have as an extension to the previous mentioned experiment made graphs and calculated on the results and found out that lead is much more effective in protecting us from radiation then aluminium is.
The materials ability to absorb ? radiation can be described by the mathematical term exponential decrease and the intensity of the radioactive substance as a function of the thickness of the material it passes through can be calculated by the formula I = I0 * ekx.
