Cassius Marcellus Clay won his first gold medal in Light heavyweight 1960 at the Summer OL in Rome.
It was the beginning of an amateur career with 187 matches and only 8 defeats. Same year he went from amateur to professional boxing.
On February 25th 1964 he got the chance for a title fight on World Cup in Heavyweight.
It was a match against the defending world champion Sonny Liston.
Cassius Marcellus Clay turned the match and was then the new world champion.On the same day he told that he was a member of Islam and a Muslim. He told that his new name from that day was Muhammad Ali.
In 1967 he was deprived of the title as world champion in the heavyweight and his boxing license.
At the same time he was sentenced to 5 years imprisonment.
In 1970 he got his boxing license back.
Muhammad Ali made a comeback on October 26th 1970 with a knockout over Jerry Quarry.
