He was born the 17 th January 1942 I Kentucky, USA. His born name was Cassius Marcellus Clay. He began a boxing carrier, when he was 12 years old. The 25 th February 1964, he got the chance to win the world championship. His opponent was Sonny Liston and he was known by smashing his opponent. When they were going to the 7 th round, liston couldn't stand up and Clay became the now world champion. The next day he changed his name from Cassius Marcellus Clay to Muhammad Ali and converted to Islam. In 1975 he became a Sunni Muslim instead.
1966 lost his right to box, because he refused to go in the military. He got 5 years in prison, but avoided by appeal. The war in Vietnam had got normally. 1970 he got his right to box back. In 1971 the supreme court said it was okay, he did not got in to the military.

In 1971 he could win back the championship in a match, against Joe Frazier, but he lost on points.
He won some matches, but he lost in 1973 to Ken Norton. People thought his time as champion was over.
