The Tower of London is a historic castle on the north bank of the River Thames in central London. It was built by William the Congueror in 1078. The White Tower is the name for the entire castle. As a whole, the Tower is a complex of several buildings. It is the oldest building used by the British Government. In the beginning the Tower was a small fort, built of wood, but William ordered later that this was demolished and replaced by something more solid. The White Tower stood ready around 20 years later. The main use of the Tower was a prison. Here a lot of famous people were sent to jail. Some were tortured and some executed. Today the Tower of London is one of the most popular tourist attractions, were people can see prisons, the execution arena and also the well known british crown-jewels.
The Beefeaters
The beef-eaters who you also can see at the Tower, are the ceremonial guardians of the Tower of London. They were formerly responsible for looking after the prisoners and the jewels. They are also known as the Yeomen Warders. Today they act as tour guides in their speciel and funny uniform and are a tourist attraction as well. The reason why they are called the beef-eaters is that they were paid with beef and not money in old days.
