Themes
In this short story the main themes are youth, friendship and pregnancy.
There is no given age, but I will presume that they are in the late teenage years.
One thing that makes me believe that they are not just turned thirteen is, that Jill will not use the address to an abortions clinic that the narrator gave her.
“ When I gave her the address my cousin Margot had scrawled, Jill smiled and placed it in her pocket, but I could tell she wasn’t interested.” That makes me think that there are on their way to a life as an adult.
Friendship is another very important theme in this short story. The narrator loves her friend more than anything and asks her cousin if she can help. The narrator is also supporting her in some not comfortable situations.
“Because Jill was my best friend, I spent a lot of time defending her”
That also shows that the narrator has a very good relationship with her friend. It also says on page 1 line 19 that Jill would do almost anything if she saw a tear in her eye.
