AMERICAN HISTORY-X by Nicklas King Kaalby Hargett Summary of the movie, American history X: Derek and he's poor family lives in a neighborhood, with lots of race related problems. Its the blacks, yellows and browns against the hardcore white skinheads. To start with, Derek doesn't mind socialising with black people, but after a while he's realizing what is going on. He think's they, are ruining their society, and that every single one of them is criminal. Derek challenge the black guys to play basketball. Blacks against whites. If Derek and his team lose, they will have to leave, but if they win the black people will have to leave immediatley, without bitching nor fighting. Eventually the white wins, and the basketball field belongs to them. But the black people is not cool with it, and therefore takes revenge on Derek, by attempting to steal his car. So it appears that he takes righteousness into his own hand for good, instead of calling the police. He gets 3 years in federal prison, for commiting such a crime as murdering three black people. Derek has a really hard time in prison. He consider himself as good as dead, before he gets released. The only way to survive the criminals inside prison, is to stick to his own "kind" and he is failing at doing so. He starts to like the black people in prison slightly more everyday, since he realise that the white people is actually trading drugs and other stuff with "the enemy". Every time he goes to work in prison, he gets a better friendship with the black guy, he is working with and atlast he figures out, that they are just as nice and funney, as the skinheads are. Yet, he is stil not safe in prison. The skinheads turns against him, some of the black people stil dont like him, and now he is on his own. Derek finally returns home, but meanwhile his brother Daniel has gotten himself into the gang environment. From now on he will have to get his family out of trouble with the gangs, and that includes getting Daniel to understand, that all what they have been doing with the gang, is not a decent way to go. Both Derek and Daniel develops alot throughout the movie. Derek goes from being the bad guy, which is almost a godlike inside the gang environment, to a decent american citizen. Derek leads Daniel into the wrong direction, and Daniel is very well known for being the little brother of Dereks. But Daniel doesn't keep on going like this after Derek returns. Derek makes him do his homework, tear down the posters of hitler and the swastika down from his wall, and help him to get out of the gang. You can't avoid hearing about all the gang violence and racism, going on these days. Even some of my relatives in the states, are racist and have a different point of view, which they dont mind shareing with others. I consider myself somewhat as a lucky person, since i dont have the potential to have any racist thoughts, and that i don't have all that much experience with gangs and stuff. My dad and mom has been working in a cafe with alot of turkish people, that i find very nice, and some of them are perhaps more thoughtful then alot of danes are. Im worried about Denmark though. Some of the things you hear in the new about violence, makes you wonder if we will turn out having such an insecure society, as U.S.A, Mexico or any other dangerous country with guns and what not. I think your personality has a big influence, depending whatever you will end up as. And then again. If you grow up in an environment with gangs, it might have some
