The American Civil War was fought in The United States of America in 1861-1865.
When Abraham Lincoln was elected as president of the U.S., 11 southern states that used slaves declared their secession from the United States and created "the Confederacy". The remaining 25 states supported Abraham Lincoln and fought against the southern states for 4 years. In the Northern part of the United States the economy was based on factories and wages. The South had large plantations which grew cotton. The plantation owners needed the slaves to pick the cotton. They did not receive wages, but they were provided food. In 1865 the civil war ended. The Northern U.S. won, and slavery was forbidden.
Approximately 620.000 people died in the Civil War.
Why do people become racists?
I believe people become racists for many different reasons. Often racism runs in the family. It can be passed through the generations. Another reason might be that some people are scared and feel threatened by people of another race, they might have bad experiences with other races; bad experiences leads to prejudices, which spreads like a disease. A lot of people are afraid of the dark, because they do not know what might happen to them. The dark makes them feel defenseless from the unknown and it makes them imagine terrible things, for no reason at all. It is the same thing that happens to some people when they encounter a person that looks different - they get scared and start to imagine terrible things about him or her. Some people are racist because they want to be accepted. They might have had a terrible childhood, not so many friends, or deep family issues. Some of these will do anything to be accepted, even pretend to be racist for so long that they convince themselves that they truly are.
