(Dialect describes a language variety where a user's regional or social background appears in his or her use of vocabulary and grammar. Of course, if we accept that all language varieties are in some sense dialects, then this is a point of the obviousness. But it may help us stop thinking that we actually all use dialects in our regular talking. Without the notion of Standard English, we may find it hard to identify anything as a dialect at all, since we are from another country with no sense of hearing the difference of Standard English and English with dialect. If we believe in English history, the language is a blend of early Frisian and Saxon, it absorbed Danish and Norman French, and later added many Latin and Greek technical terms.)

(In the UK several types of English are spoken. English is of course English, but in the UK it is spoken with many different accents. In England they speak British English, in Ireland they speak Irish, in Scotland they speak Scottish and in Wales they speak Welsh. These forms of English are very different to each other. British English is very formal compared to the other types of English. It can be very hard to understand some accents. Especially welsh is very hard to understand.
