Being parents can be hard in a society where everyone has a different culture than themselves, most of all when it’s about how to educate their own children. Many dilemmas can be difficult to handle, and sometimes the parents will be forced to choose between their own expectations about right or wrong, and what's best for their children. Things that might to look good and helpful for the children, in the parents’ eyes, can affect them negatively, because it isn't always easy to see reality in the right way. I've read a short story called "The mother of the child in question", where the meaning of honor plays a role when choices have to be made. I want to find out how much of the mother's behavior that is coming from moral stances, and how much that is coming from overprotection. I also want to find out how much the social worker should interfere and why.
A socialworker is going to visit the Pakistani family Khan, and he has an agreement with the father about his visit. However, the father isn't home, and has left his twelve-years old son, Hassan, with the role of an interpreter between the socialworker and the mother, who doesn't speak English. It was Hassan that opened the door, and I quickly got the impression that he was being controlled by the mom. "'Where is Mr. Khan?' asked Stephen of Mrs. Khan, who nodded commandingly at her son ". That the mother looked at her son in that way indicated to me, that she had an expectation about how Hassan replied for her. Her reacted also gave me an idea about her wanting to make everything seem perfect, as if nothing was wrong.
