No matter how hard teenagers try we can never fully understand our mothers. We believe they can have absurd ideas and point of views and that they are behaving embarrassing on purpose. Never the less mothers always seem to have an idea about what they are doing, and whatever they do, they believe it’s to benefit us, their children. That I believe is what this story is about.
The story takes place in what seems to be a ghetto in England with heavy buildings made out of cement and many small apartments with urine-smelling stairs in the hallway. Clearly this must be a very poor area. The Khan family’s apartment on the other hand is shining and seems quite beautiful in its own way with a red plush sofa in a small room crammed with furniture.
The setting is of course described to us by our main character; social worker Stephen Bentley who is trying to convince the Khan family that their youngest daughter must go to a school for mentally challenged children. He is very observant and he is very focused on the mother and the way the children smiles. I believe it must be a part of his job to look for anything unusual and that is also why he says that: “There was something going on, but he could not make out what”.
