This personal diary entry describes a young person's first hunting experience, where he expects to become a "real man". The experience, however, leads to a profound sense of emptiness, the loss of childhood innocence, and a disturbing desensitization to taking life. The text explores the psychological consequences of violence and identity formation.

Today was a day that will change my life forever. It started early in the morning, a new day and a new start. It was today, I was going to be a man. I felt so strong and powerful before we started shooting kangaroos. I looked forwards to shooting the kangaroos, so it could change me from being a boy to being a real man. I thought that it was one thing that just happened, but I was going to be cleverer.

The day started with, that the man and I stood in the paddock, and I should shoot my first kangaroo. I was much exited, and I looked while the man shot two kangaroos, and I saw that he had shot it behind the neck so it didn’t feel a thing. I couldn’t believe it was real, that it happened so fast and so easily. Now it was my turn to shoot a kangaroo, and I lowered the sights and shot. I was surprised how easy it had been, and I couldn’t remember that I had pulled the trigger. When I saw the dead kangaroo I felt empty inside, I had expected that it would make me a man, but it had not changed anything at all. Then we shot more and more kangaroos and I felt more and more empty inside. Something inside me dead, my whole childhood, and I knew that I couldn’t get it back again. It scared me a bit, because I knew that I wasn’t a man either. And when I looked at the kangaroos after I had shot them, I realized that they hadn’t done anything to me at all, and I had just ended their life to anything’s advantage at all. All this things made me feel sad, and it made me sad to think about, that I now was in a state of my life where I don’t was a boy, but not a man either. But then there came a very big kangaroo, maybe the leader of the herd, the king-kangaroo. I was sure that this kangaroo was the chance I had to get a man. I hesitated before I shoot it, but the man cried out that I should shoot it, and when I had shot it, he said that it had been a pretty nice shoot. But when I then saw the dead kangaroo, I felt like a stone inside, this big kangaroo hadn’t make me a man either.
