Have you ever looked at the sky and seen a cloud shaped like a dog, and told your sister” Hey, look! That cloud looks like a dog” and she said” No, that just looks like a cloud”, because she wanted to come off as wiser than you? Look, this isn’t about condensed watery vapors floating around in the blue, blue sky and if they look like cats and dogs. It’s deeper than that, which that seems to be the conflict between Kirsty and Emily in the short story” Jellyfish” by Catherine Smith.
The story begins in a media res with the narrator in second person slicing onions. Slicing onions or cutting onions is also knows as a term for crying, which the narrator addresses when she says that she never cries when cutting onions, but it’s the opposite for Emily. This tells us that Emily is more sensitive in the sense that she shows her feelings and doesn’t hide them. She doesn’t only show her feelings but her thoughts, her way of understanding the World. As for Kirsty, she is more in control of what she feels and shows. I would say she really loved Emily but her emotionally unstableness made her unable to show all her feelings to Emily.
