This paper examines the literary minimalism of the writer Helle Helle through an analysis of her newest novel “Dette burde skrives I nutid”; this is done through a review of the trends in the literary realism and minimalism in Denmark. Furthermore the principle “less is more” and its equal techniques is analysed through an interest in the measures of writing small books which have much to say. The study shows that the literary minimalism uses a lot of the means from the artistic minimalism, but differs on many levels as well. The overall characteristics are defined by a large amount of reductions, laconic syntaxes and dissociation from symbolism.
Furthermore the study identifies some of the classic themes, as communication issues, everyday problems and the limitations of human beings. The whole package is assembled through an instant connection between the reader and the narrator. Ultimately the analysis is discussed through the eyes of the critics, where the means of writing less has more to say than the amount of words in the novel.
