I am not a Christian. I do not go to church every Sunday and I do not believe in God. Still, every Christmas, I do go to church. I dance around a big tree decorated with glitter and small figurines whilst singing about how the lord has sent us a savior. I gladly accept presents from friends and family, all in the name of Christianity. I do so for one reason – and one reason only: Because it makes me happy. And I am not alone.

Yes, Christmas is a religious holiday, but it is also the time of year that we are all given an excuse to show our gratitude towards the people we love. For one night a year, we forget our skepticism and our rationality and replace it with a healthy dose of hope and belief. Belief in magic, love and maybe even a watchful God, who will essentially guide us through, when we seem the most lost. Maybe it is a little hypocritical of us to wallow in the glory and pleasure of a religion we choose to defy and undermine for the rest of the year. It only seems fair that we should stay loyal to a religion to enjoy its benefits. On the other hand, Christmas – religious as it may be – also represents pure values that are in no way related directly to the birth of Jesus Christ today.
