Definition of subculture found in the Oxford Dictionary: “a cultural group within a larger culture, often having beliefs or interests at variance with those of the larger culture.”
When I think about the word subculture, the first thing I think about is people who want to be different. People who don’t want to be part of the mainstream culture.
But when I think more about it, I also realize that some people are part of a subculture, because they’re actually interested in the lifestyle. Let’s use skaters as an example. Normally skaters don’t skate because they want to be different, they skate because they think it’s fun, interesting, challenging etc.
But why do all skaters dress the same? Do you have to wear the same clothes just because you like doing the same activities?
I honestly don’t know, but one of the reasons why I might think they do it is to show off that they are skaters. So other people see them and instantly thinks “He looks like a skater”.
I also find it kind of funny that we call skaters a subculture. Because here in Denmark, it’s very in to be a skater. I would say that it’s kind of mainstream to be a skater, because almost 1/4 of all teenagers in Denmark are skaters.
