These days being part of a subculture is something that nearly every teenager doing. If it is unconscious or not we will never known but what do know is that it is a big part of shaping identity, beliefs and mannerisms in the youth. Wheater its skating, hip hop, gaming or cosplaying, they all make a place where the youth can belong and feel at home in. In this essay we will try to understand how subcultures are one of the factors in shaping teenagers identity and expression and all the consequences.
One of the most important factors of youth identity is subcultures. The period where the youth discover themselves the most is called “Adolescence”(1), subcultures have a catalysing effect in how young people get to explore and are also good at making the youth feel secure and safe so they can have the courage to explore. For example people who are into K-pop will see their favourite stars rocking outfits with confidence and think, “I can do the same”. This will give them the confidence to get outfits inspired by their idols, and wear them out in public. This will also automatically make them express themselves in ways out of normal culture or mainstream society. They also get a lot of confidence by young people like themselves also sharing interests and backing eachother up.
