Analog og digital

Analog betyder tilsvarende. En skrivemaskine er analog, da den med et bogstav af jern trykker på et farvebånd, så der kommer et tilsvarende bogstav på papiret. Den digitale afløser for skrivemaskinen er en computer. Et bogstav på en computer består af en bestemt række elektroniske impulser.

De digitale apparater har flere muligheder end de tilsvarende analoge. I tekstbehandling kan du rette og flytte teksten rundt, efter du har skrevet den, hvilket du ikke kan på en skrivemaskine, der er analog. Et digitalt billede kan du også let ændre og manipulere på skærmen. Et digitalt tv har mulighed for at modtage otte gange så mange kanaler som et analogt tv, da en normal sendefrekvens kan deles op i otte digitale. På samme måde har en DAB radio (digital radio) også mulighed for at modtage flere radiokanaler - og i en bedre kvalitet.

Bit og byte

IT er ikke noget mystisk. En computer består i princippet af et hav af kontakter med to muligheder. En kontakt kan enten være tændt, så der løber strøm igennem den, eller slukket, så der ikke løber strøm igennem den. Så for at computeren kan arbejde, bliver alle informationer omformet til et talsystem af nuller og ettaller. Vi siger, at systemet har en binær (todelt) struktur.
