War costs a lot of lives and is therefore debated a lot in the medias. People become aware of the misery and death that are ravaging the world and some feel the need to contribute to a better world by joining the military.
”Why they serve” made by Sarah Palin, admires the soldiers. Young men are enlisting for the military to create a safe environment for their families, friends and country, by risking their own lives. Sarah says that Americans are patriotic and not necessarily ideological. The reason why America is an exceptional country is because it was founded on the idea, that every man is free. When soldiers are defending the country, they are protecting this freedom – and consequently the idea of America. She is also clarifying that the very least, you can do, is to support them.
“A Soldier’s Story: War affects whole family” of David Zucchino is about the consequences that may follow combat. In the text, we follow Sergeant Ryan Kahlor who has returned from battle and has several physical and mental illnesses. He does not care for anybody and is a complete stranger to his parents. His condition is not only affecting him but also his parents who are diagnosed with secondary PSTD, because they couldn’t bear witnessing their son’s physical and mental breakdown. Even though the family is grateful for the counseling and benefits the military has provided, “it still wasn’t worth it”, ergo they wouldn’t let their son enlist again.
