Roberta Powers, 29 was found sitting in a chair by the window when the police arrived. She was drinking a cup of tea, looking quietly out the window. Thinking about the father she never knew. Thinking of the things she had done in the last couple of weeks and not regretting a single thing. When the police walked in, told her to follow them to the station and that she was under arrest, she quietly finished her tea, got up from the chair, took her coat and followed them out the door.
Ever since Joan Smith had been a little girl she’d gotten herself into trouble. Been bullied by the boys and left out by the girls. She got caught in unwise situations and got blamed for everybody else’s mistakes. Without a father figure in her life, her mother had to raise her all by herself and without much money to do so. Joan never asked her mum what she did late at night when she disappeared into the darkness, leaving Joan looking at her from the window, because she didn’t want to know. She had no interest in her mother’s way of living and little of her own. She just moved on, went where life took her, and never had any time to stop and think things through.
