“A lot of people wonder how Chinese parents raise such stereotypically successful kids. They wonder what these parents do to produce so many math whizzes and music prodigies,” writes the Tiger mom Amy Chua in her book Battle Hymn of the Tiger mother. “Well I can tell them because I’ve done it.” With those provocative words Amy Chua starts a big discussion about whether the Chinese- or the western-style is the best, is the Chinese children more successful than the Western and what is success?

The Western and the Asian way of parenting are very different from each other. When speaking of parenting in the western-style we often use words as encouragement and compliments. Just opposite in the Chinese and East Asian way, where words as respect and control often are used. The Chinese and the Western parents want’s the same thing: to get their children a good and successful life. The difference is just what we see as being “good” and “successful”. If you ask Amy Chua she would say that a good and successful life is a life where you get good grades and can play either the violin or the piano. If you ask for example my mother she would say that a good and successful life would be to do what you love the most. In Amy Chua’s she also tells about how she forces her children to do their homework and rehearse piano or violin for two hours each day, and if they deny she threats to burn their toys. This is a thing that we would defiantly not do in Europe or America. A parent from the western world would ask their children to do their homework and hope they would say yes.
