Ireland, traditionally a military "neutrality policy". Ireland was neutral during World War 2 and has never been a member of NATO or other military organizations. Ireland has a relatively small defense force. While most neutral states not allow any foreign military in their territory, Ireland has allowed foreign military aircraft to refuel at Shannon Airport. 1952, a law decided that exceptionally could an authorization to foreign military aircraft overflying or landing in Ireland, if they don't bring weapons, and that they will not participate in military exercises or operations.Following the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001 in New York got foreign military aircraft that under the UN participating in the hunt for terrorists permission to land in Ireland. Irish governments have always said that if authorized to military aircraft uses Irish land does not mean that Ireland is taking part in any military conflict, but is with a neutral position.A neutral state may also provide its citizens permission to serve in other countries' military forces. For example, the Irish Government forwarded during 2nd world war its citizens permission to sign up for duty in the British Army. Approximately 70,000 Irish citizens volunteered in the British Army. The Allies planes were allowed to fly across and tanks at Irish airports. A total of 1,400 military aircraft and 15,000 soldiers passed through Foynes airport during the war years.During the Cold War, hold Ireland's policy of neutrality and refused to become a member of NATO. A US offer to set up a separately alliance with the United States was also rejected.
