The English first came to Ireland in 117 when King Henry the second sent over a group of noblemen. The King declared himself “Lord of Ireland”. The Irish and the English lived together quite peacefully in various little clans until 1541 when King Henry VIII had himself, and this successors declared “king of Ireland”.
Seven years earlier Henry VIII had made the Church of England independent of the pope in Rome so that it was no longer a Catholic church. But the Irish were Catholics and did not want to break with Rome as their new king demanded.
Inn 1558 Henry VIII died and his second daughter, Elizabeth, became queen. By this time the irish had started a series of revolts against the English. Queen Elizabeth the first sent English and Scottish settlers to the island to live there.
But what caused the conflict was that they took away the Irish people’s land.
Religion was also part of the conflict between the two peoples. The English passed a law that said that Catholics could no longer buy land or own anything worth more than 5 pounds.
In 1641 another rebellion against the settlers began and many English and Scottish immigrants were murdered.
