”Think before you act” is a famous saying, voiced by many people in many different languages. The main purpose of this expression is to convey a message of thinking rationally before you act, and is therefore a saying everyone can relate to. This way of “thinking before acting” becomes a valuable lesson a person can use throughout his life. This especially becomes important in case of emergency, for example at 9/11, as is the case in Tom Cushman’s short story “Something About Jack”. In this story you hear about a family experiencing the 9/11 disaster from afar, and as the protagonist acts irrationally, his 15-month-old child serves as a help for him, to make him think clearly, and to calm him down. Cushman, in his story, displays the wrong actions of people in panicked situations through the protagonist, and comments on them via the 15-month-old Jack.
