"you shouldn´t complain, you are in the best years of your life. "What I wouldn´t give to be a kid again - to be free of responsibilities and expectations... And so on. This idea that children don´t have problems of their own seems to be a very common notion nowadays. Everybody longs back to this time where life was no harder than a stroll through the park, just eternal fun and happiness... Back to the good old days where they themselves were a kid.
In reality, however, even children must from time to time face the cold, bitter and unavoidable challenges that life presents. Challenges that every child must conquer in order to become a well-acknowledged adult with a respectable job and good family relations.
In the short-story "Ernie Breaks" Genevieve Scott sheds light on these challenges of growing up through the life of a girl in elementary-school as she struggles with school, responsibilities and keeping a good relationship to her brother.
The story starts out while the girl, Cara, and her mom are shopping. Cara just passed fourth grade and her brother Jed passed his grade as well, so they are suitably enough looking for a passing present for the two of them. Already here you get a glimpse of Cara´s personality as she asks her mom if they can get a puppy. Cara is like so many kids at that age looking for responsibility and in a sense wanting to seem older and more mature than she is. Her mother declines, however, and they end up looking for a fish instead.
