Tiger Moms: Kinesisk og vestlig opdragelse

Now, first of all, please forgive me for any prejudices, in trying to compare these two cultures. We, being the western born people, all wonder how Chinese parents mostly raise successful kids. What do they do, and what is their secret to produce so many music prodigies and math genius’. We always wonder how a normal day for a Chinese kid is, and how it is inside the four walls of the home. In the enclosed files we hear about a Chinese mother called Amy Chua, and her two daughters Louisa and Sophia. Amy Chua is a very strict parent like most mothers in China are. There are numerous things her daughters can’t do, things, which are actually quite normal in a Western house. Her daughters may not attend a sleepover, have a play date, be in a school play, watch TV or play computer games. Nor can they choose their own extracurricular activities, or get any grade less than A. They have to excel as a no. 1 student in every subject except gym and drama, play either the piano or the violin. These were only the rules mentioned in the files, beside these there are probably many more. When Western parents hear how Chinese parents raise their children they are often speechless. According to Chua, the Chinese mother believes that schoolwork always comes first, an A-minus is a bad grade, you must never compliment your children in public and the medal must always be gold. These guidelines are only a few of many.
