I checked the sky for signs of rain and set off early to make the most of the day. I had packed my bag with a few necessities – a bite to eat, a bottle of water and heaps of curiosity about what the day would bring. So there I was, on my way in to the unknown. I could see the big beautiful New Zealand mountains in the background. I was very curious about the nature in New Zealand. I had never been in New Zealand before, and I had never been on a long walk in the wilderness. I had a map and a compass if I ever got lost. I promised my parents, that I would be back in a few hours. My mom insisted to go with me, but I said that it could be good if I had some time with myself. After half an hour I came to a very rocky terrain, I had heard that the rocks was from and early volcanic eruption. The rocks was razor sharp, if you slipped were there a high risk it could end very badly. It took much longer time to travel across the rocks than expected. I could´t take the same route back because of the time it took and the risk of falling. I quickly realized that I were not able to get home in time. Therefore I planned a route, that would follow the river to a city a few miles away. Each time I look up at the sky it became darker and darker, and the light from the full moon and the stars became brighter and brighter. One of the reasons we chose to visit New Zealand, is because of the beautiful nights. At home the lights from the surrounding cities fade away the lights from the stars. When I came to the river, I saw a small bridge to cross. The wood on the bridge was rotten but I had to cross it. The cold melted ice from the mountains, rushed down the river with great speed. I slowly moved across the small narrow bridge. And then It happened, my leg went right throw a plank of wood. My leg continued throw the bridge, my head struck a plank of wood and I lost consciousness for a second or two. I went in to the freezing water and sank to the bottom of the river. I got dragged across the bottom while I was fighting my way to the surface. I somehow dragged my self on to the shore after breaking the water surface. I was frightened but also very delighted that I made it that day. I keep thinking back and how I managed to survive in that situation. It learned that you always need a body with you in case of emergency, even if it don´t seems necessary.
