Billy Elliot The story is about a boy called Billy Elliot. His family is composed of the father Jackie, the big brother Tony and the old grandmother. The mother died two years ago, and it seems that the family still is in sorrow. Billy misses her and wants to talk about her and the memories about her. But Tony tries to be tough. Billy has to go to boxing, because his father forces him to. But he doesn’t give a toss about the boxing. He listens to the ballet music when he boxes. Billy realizes how much he enjoys the ballet, and he things there are other things in life than boxing. The family is in big problems, because of the miner strike, so they haven’t enough money. The story takes place in the United Kingdom, in the northern England. Billy and his family are living in a poor neighborhood. The story is in the year around 1984-1985, during the coal miners’ strike. Billy is the youngest boy in the house. He is different compared to his father and brother. His mother is dead, and he misses her. Billy is different in proportion to almost all the other boys at his age. The other boys are boxing, and so is Billy. But the only reason for that is because his father forces him to go. Billy finds ballet more interesting and is very curious about the dancing. Billy has a huge talent of dancing and he is very good at it. He loves music, and he has a lot of rhythm in his body, and he can’t stand still. The ballet makes him happy, and he dancing all the way home from the ballet class. He also practices at home. When he is dancing, he forgets all the problems at home. He has potential to go to the ballet school in New Castle. It is his passion and dream, going to the audition. Billy is very responsible to his grandmother, and takes care of her. He makes breakfast to her and is looking after her when she is confused. She might suffer from alzheimers disease and runs away early and late. Billy has a very good friend, called Michael. They are spending a lot of time with each other. They have knowing each other since they were little. Michael helps Billy realize that ballet is not just for girls and gays. Billy has a special ability and power. He is able to keep going on even he has a hard time at home. He has a lot of stamina, and that is a very important capacity for Billy. He deals with lots of problems. His family has not enough money, because of the strike. He would never make enough of money to the audition. Another problem Billy is dealing with is the other kids at his age. They are bulling him, because he is dancing ballet. All is against Billy and the fact that he is dancing, but he does it anyway, because that is his dream and his passion. Billy’s father is called Jackie. He is an angry and masterful man. He has a lot of feelings he carries about. His wife is dead, and he is alone with his two sons, Billy and Tony and the old grandmother. Billy’s father works in a mine with his oldest son, Tony. But at the moment is there strike, and about 187.000 people are on strike. Jackie has been made redundant, and had lost his job. As it is, they don’t have lots of money, and Jackie is kind of desperate to earn money so he can provide for his family. Jackie misses his wife, and it seems that he won’t face the truth. Jackie gets very disappointed and mad at Billy when he found out that Billy is dancing ballet. But at the same time is he very concerned and worried about Billy. He wound allow him to dance, and wants Billy to boxing like all the other normal boys at Billy’s age. He means that ballet is not a sport for boys and he thinks it is important to be able to protect yourself. But in the end of the story, Jackie wants to support his son. He loves Billy and will stand by his side.He becomes aware of his Billy’s talent and his passion to the ballet. Jackie needs money so Billy can go to The Royal Ballet School in London, so he sells his wife’s wedding ring. He feels sad about it and it breaks his heart because the ring reminds him of his wife, and she was a big part of him. But he is trying to moving on. Billy’s father plans to go back to work in the mines, so he can gets enough of money to Billy. He gets a break down and collapses because he doesn’t know what to do. He wants to make both of his sons happy. He feels like a traitor but he does not mind because he does it for Billy and his family, he feels like he has to do it. Jackie uses violence against Tony during an argument. But he regrets it and is being sorry for what he done. It overwhelmed him that he reacted like that. Tony is a bit selfish but he has also a big heart. When he finds out Billy is dancing, he gets upset and thinks it is ridiculous. He is skeptical because Billy is being a poof. He will not support Billy, but in the end he wants to help his little brother and support him. Tony has lots of emotions. We see him on the strike, where he seems very aggressive, tough and violent. But in the end, where he is going to say goodbye to Billy, he fells tears. He is not as tough as he might seem. Tony seems mad almost all the time, and he curses a lot. But he is actually a good boy, who is very sensitive and wants to help his family. He is trying to put away the sorrow about their mother. Tony is a lot like his father, and they have the same attitude and position. Tony also loves music, just like Billy. That is the one thing they have in common. But Tony won’t share the music with his brother. Tony gets very upset when he sees his father is in the bus to the pit. He won’t allow him to do that. Mrs. Wilkinson is a ballet teacher, and she becomes Billy’s private teacher. She spots Billy’s talent to the ballet, and she wants to help Billy. She uses lots of time to teach him. She realizes that Billy deals with some personal problems at home. Mrs. Wilkinson has a husband and a daughter. But she seems not fully happy. Her husband once had affair and he was unfaithful to her. She is a strong and determined woman. There are different classes in the story. Billy and his family belong to the working class. They have a low income, but there is enough money to live. But because of the strike, the Elliot family is moving from the working class, to be a part of the underclass. Mrs. Wilkinson and her husband belong to the middle class. They live in a middle class home. Billy had high exportations to how a middle-class home would look like. He is surprised then he sees the house inside, he thought it would be a lot bigger.The wealthiest people in the story, is the people on The Royal Ballet School. They have a inherit title and have money. The members and teachers of the ballet school, belongs to the upper class. The themes in the story are dreams and hopes versus reality. While Billy is forced to box by his father, he has a dream about dancing ballet. Another theme in the story is family and relationships, and the conflicts there might be. And the most important theme is the text is the social classes and how it has an effect on the society they live in.
