The story takes places in North East England during the UK miners’ strike in the 1980’s. The environment Billy and his family lives in is quite a poor environment since most of the citizens in the city are miners thus they all are on a strike. The miners who are on strike makes a ‘picket line’, which is a sort of public protest. Those who do not strike will then have to cross the picket line and have the miners on strike shout ‘scabs’ (which means strikebreaker) at them, because the miners on strike look down upon the working miners.

”Billy Elliot” (2000) directed by Stephen Daldry is about a young boy called Billy who aspire to be a ballet dancer. Billy lives with his older brother Tony and his father Jackie who are both coal miners.

Billy is an 11-year-old boy who goes to boxing to please his father Jackie even though Billy dislikes the sport. One day when Billy is at the gym a ballet class happens to be there and Billy gets interested in ballet. The ballet teacher, Ms. Wilkinson notices Billy watching and tells him to join them. Billy joins them and little by little, he comes to love ballet. Billy cannot tell his dad that he joined a ballet class so he keeps it a secret but eventually Billy’s father finds out. Billy’s father forbids him to dance ballet because he is afraid people are going to consider Billy gay, but Billy continues to dance in all secrecy. Ms. Wilkinson believes Billy has the talent to go to the Royal Ballet School and even gets him an audition but due to Tony’s arrest, Billy misses the chance.
