The film starts out with the main character, Billy using his bed as a trampoline. The film takes place 1980’s, at the same time as Margaret Thatcher was prime minister. The life of 11-years old Billy Elliot, who’s a coal miner's son in Northern England.
His live is forever changed, when Billy one day stops practicing boxing, and starts with ballet. Billy’s father forces him to box, even though Billy is really bad at it.
A ballet class has been moved to the city. After a bad boxing lesson Billy ends up joining the ballet class, and he is soon drawn to the dancing art of ballet. Billy’s father finds out that Billy isn’t boxing anymore, but now dancing. He gets really upset, and banned Billy from the ballet.
Billy’s father and brother are both men on strike from their job, as coalminers, and they are strukling so much, that they barely cant get food on the table. They are both so frustrated, because of the strike that they any time can explode. That means the family have lot of angry, and problems.
