“Ghosts” is a short story written by Naomi Wood in 2012. The main character is a woman named Pia. The short story takes place on her 40th birthday. Pia is one of the few characters in the short story. Besides Pia, we only get to know her partner Daniel and some random people on the streets.
The short story begins during Pia’s day. She just finished the daily work and is about to leave the park and get home. Daniel, her partner, is waiting at home to take her to a restaurant celebrating her birthday. Pia drives a wild route and she is kind of ‘time travelling’ in her car. We meet Pia on her 40th birthday. She feels weird about turning 40: “.. turn forty. All year, in fact, she’d felt rather hollowed-out”. (Page 1, line 19) She keeps her focus on the radio instead of the traffic and has actually, within this frame of time, been inspired by the newsreader talking about subatomic particles called neutrinos (“Ghostly”) has turned the world upside down. Turning forty should be something to celebrate but to Pia it is the same as digging her own grave. While driving she decides to roll down the window because of her temperature begins to rise. She does not care about anything else but her mind, so she just ignore the slow signs. This is typical when she starts to feel sorry for herself.
