The story is about John Duncan, which is a biologist. He lived with his wife and children. John and his wife, was making a company with boats. But one day when his wife was on the boat in storm, she was drowned by the storm. Then the company closed, and John was a poor old man. John was searching a job, and he gets it on a paint factory. After getting the job he bought a house near the river. He also bought a boat, so that he and his children can sail on it at the river.
Every day he has to test the paints. One day when he was testing paint he splits it on his legs. He was very worried about it, so he went to a doctor. The said that there is no problem with it, but it will take a while to erase. He worked with Mary (a chemist) in the factory. One day he invites her to a dinner. But the dinner wasn´t good, because his children didn´t like her. But latter they began to like her. One day he tests the paints on rats. He made a report:
Several experiments were done on rats to drinking the waste products which are test by the factory. These chemicals are diluted and on most days less than two parts per million go into the river. Two groups of mother rats were given produced which are contained the waste products: the first group had five parts per million; the second group had two parts per million. When the baby rats were born, in the first group some had no eyes some had no ears and some had six legs. In the second group some rats born without legs. These results show that it is not safe to put these chemicals in the river. The company must build machines to clean up the waste products before they leave the company.
