Kruger National Park

Kruger National Park is the largest game reserve (an area of land set aside for maintenance of wildlife for tourism or hunting.) in South Africa. It covers 18,989 square km.

It is one of the biggest and most famous national parks in the world. It was opened in 1898 as a “Government Wildlife Park.”.

In the beginning, the park was known as “Sabi Game Reserve”, but in 1926 it was expanded and named after Paul Kruger (former State President of the South African Republic (Transvaal)).

The park opened for public visitors in 1927. It became quick a popular place for hunting, cause Kruger is home to a big number of species: 336 trees, 49 fish, 34 amphibians, 114 reptiles, 507 birds and 147 mammals. The subtropical climate in the park is also very attracting. Summer days are hot and humid with temperatures up to 40°C and above. September until May is the “rainy moths”.

For many reasons, the dry winter season is the ideal time to visit this region. There is less chance of getting malaria and there is a better chance for seeing animals as the vegetation is lower and animals are drawn to the waterholes to drink every morning and evening. All the “Big Five” game animals (lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard and rhino), are found at Kruger National Park, which also makes it very popular as a travelling target.
