What would you feel like if you got locked in an old, nasty apartment for 15 years with your brothers by your own parents? I think most people would feel quite depressed and sad all the time. Imagine looking out of the window and down on the street which is full of people and cars and has an environment you have never really been part of, because you have never been out of the house. So therefore you start living your life through movies and escapes reality and become “The Wolfpack”.
“The Wolfpack” is a documentary directed by Crystal Moselle, about a group of 6 brothers and 1 sister with Angulus as their surname, who lives on the lower east side of Manhattan. They have been locked in their apartment for 15 years by their parents. All they have spent their time doing all these years, is watching movies and recreating the movies and making their own. When they started getting older, one of the brothers sneaked out of the house one day and that is how they got out of that apartment, and could start making their own decisions.
It seems like they did not spent very much money on making “The Wolfpack”. It kind of feel like they almost want you to get that feeling of a homemade movie like the brothers made. They just sit there and talk to the cameraman in the dark apartment, so you get the feeling of how the atmosphere is in the apartment. The Angulus brothers seem really awkward and weird in front of the camera, but you can not blame them since they have never been interacting with other people from the outside, and have been isolated from the world, which will make you a bit crazy. You also see the dad keeping an eye on them, while their filming the documentary, and you get to know that he drinks all the time, so the brothers have had to stick together all the years, to maintain their consciousness and not go crazy like their father. Their mother really wants to connect with them, compared to their father, who just takes distance from them.
