Gollum once were a hobbit like Bilbo, at least before the ring changed him. Bilbo lives in a comfortable and warm hobbit hole, described on page 3:” Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole wit nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit hole, and that means comfort”. Actually Gollum once lived in a hobbit hole as well, which he remembers talking to the hobbit on page 85: “Gollum brought up memories of ages and ages and ages before, when he lived with his grandmother in a hole in a bank by a river”. They are both described as small creatures which is characteristic for hobbits. Gollum is described on page 81: “Deep down here by the dark water lived old Gollum, a small slimy creature”. Bilbo is described on page 4: “They are (or were) a little people, about half our height, and smaller than the bearded Dwarves”. They do also both spend much time alone, which is characteristic for hobbits as well. Gollum lives all by himself and speaks to himself which is shown clearly on page 83: “What iss he, my preciouss? Whispered Gollum (who always spoke to himself through never having anyone else to speak to)”. Gollum is evil in some ways because he kills people, the first example of that, is on page 82: “He liked meat too. Goblin he thought good, when he could get it; but he took care they never found him out. He just throttled them from behind”. But he is also childish and eagers company. On page 83 he remembers games he used to play when he had friends, and when Mr. Baggins and Gollum tells each other riddles, his good side is shown.
