He is actually only there to say goodbye, because that feeling is important for him, when he has to leave a place. In the ending of the chapter, he is visiting his old history teacher, because he has left a note for him.

He was sitting in his room with the annoying Ackley, who takes all of his personal stuff. Then his roomie enters the room and goes to the bathroom to get a shower. He talks about the writers he loves.

Holden and Stradlater are talking in the bathroom while Stradlater shaves. Stradlater is going on a date with Jane Gallagher, which makes Holden very excited. They are talking about Jane. And Ackley comes over and staying for dinnertime.
