'Tomorrow is too far': Jealousy and temptation

Jealousy and temptation makes a person unable to think and act rationally. The negative feelings gradually build up and end as irrational and crazy actions. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie allows her readers to put oneself inside the story in ‘’Tomorrow is too far’’ through a tactful use of symbolism, irony, narrative perspective and development of a complex character.This is what happened to the protagonist in the story ‘’Tomorrows is too far’’. The protagonist kills Nonso because she is jealous of him being the one to carry the family lineage. He has always gotten the attention of the family especially the grandmother. 18 years later when the protagonist returns to Nigeria she hears her grandmother passed away and that she kept talking about Nonso till she passed away. Which leaves her with a feeling of emptiness. The second person in ‘’Tomorrows is too far’’ creates a bond between the reader and the story. The reader is pulled into the action and we get a peek at the character’s emotions and relationships.The protagonist is a girl that hates Nonso and loves her cousin. The jealousy turns into anger and gradually into hatred.Throughout the story, it’s shown that the protagonist’s hatred for her brother grew stronger and stronger.‘’that your hate for your brother Nonso grew so much you felt it squeezing your nostrils while your love for your cousin Dozie ballooned and wrapped around your skin’’.The hatred that the main character had towards Nonso didn’t emerge from himself but from the inequality in the way they were treated from their grandmother.
