The short story, ”school run”, is about a girl who during the story becomes a woman and is in love with a boy called Magnus. They grow up together and she gives him rides to school every day. Although he is a boy of many talents Magnus is by many considered rather odd. The story starts by telling us about the boy and the girl, how they meet, when and why she falls in love with him, and that he is very gifted. The story progresses rapidly in to the future and tells us that they are married and later they have children together. Throughout this, the main characters friends talk to her and say things about Magnus and try to get her to find someone else or ask if Magnus or his friends are cute. Even the mother shows signs of distaste towards Magnus because of how strange he is, despite adoring him and his talent at an earlier stage.

The narrative technique used in this short story is the first person perspective, which means we are following the main character and we know of her thoughts and actions and what she sees and feels. The effect of this is that first of all we know everything that the first person knows, but we also get an angle on things that happen around her such as the fact that pretty much the only thing we know of her friends is that they are shallow which is shown when the main character explains that they seem to be falling in love for reasons like, whether he or his friends are cute or can he drive. They also think that the main character should try to find someone else.
