It was very difficult being black in 1950s and 1960s in America, because black people did not have so many rights. The black people worked for white families where they helped with taking care of the children, cooking food and cleaning up the house. Despite that the black people worked in the house, they were not allowed to use the toilet because the white people thought they were dirty. It was not only in the white families´ houses that there were inequality amongst black and whites, but also in the society in general. For example as we see in the movie called ``The Help´´ where the black people could not sit in the front of the bus and where they had to sit outside the restaurant with only black people. They were not allowed to eat with white people.
I think it is very fascinating that Aibileen is able to be happy when she spends more time with the white children than with her own. How is it possible for Aibileen to be treated as a slave but still being able to pass all her love to the white children? Aibileen works for Elizabeth who is the mother in the white family. Elizabeth is a typical upper class woman who does not bother having a relationship with her daughter Mae and therefore Mae and Aibileen grow really close to each other. Aibileen is always happy when she is together with Mae. She does not show that she is in fact really sad, she is always optimistic and teaches Mae a lot of new things. We learn from the movie that Aibileen has lost a son and she cried when she told it to her friend. I think it is very touching that she has lost her son and yet she is still capable of loving someone elses child.
