When we think of hippies, we immediately think of bare breasted women, with a joint tugged in between the lips and with flowers decorating their hair. But this youth movement is much more than that. These people had had enough of the so called American dream, they were supposed to live. Mostly young people had gotten this “new left” vision. They wanted to change and give their touch on how American culture is. This weird and difficult period is also referred to as “the years that shaped a generation”
In the 1960’s a band by the name Beatles toured in America, and really helped this movement grow. Not long everyone wanted a haircut like the Beatles. The aim was to look like you didn’t care. This soon became a thing, young people had in common. And thus, a new generation had started their impact on America, and not all people liked that.
A strong cause the Hippies tough for was peace. They firmly believed in loving everyone, and with these norms and ethics they went on peace demonstrations against something that totally contradicts everything. The Vietnam war. A war on foreign soil where thousands of young American soldiers would lose their lives. The protests were named peace protest because of their ethics. No violence only love.
