The movie is about the relationship between Nelson Mandela and a prison guard called James Gregory. James Gregory is a prison guard and lives with his wife and his two kids, in a town near the prison, where Nelson Mandela is imprisoned. His wife is very addicted of James’ job as prison guard, because she doesn’t have a job. James tries as good as he can, to keep his job and make his family happy.

Meanwhile Nelson Mandela gets to talk a little with James, because they grew up at the same place, so they both talk the South African language: Xhosa. Nelson Mandela makes James think about the rights of the black people and what Nelson Mandela was in prison for. James begins to read the laws of Apartheid in South Africa and realises that it is a very unfair law. He begins to fight for Nelson Mandela in “secret” and help Nelson as good as he can. He gives Nelsons wife a piece of chocolate, and then the press hears about that. James gets in a lot of trouble for that, and he begins to talk more “in public” for Nelson Mandela.

Later, Nelson Mandela gets out of prison thanks to James. James fought for his case in all those 27 years that Nelson Mandela was in prison.
